The Radar Station at Neatishead began operation in 1941 and RAF Neatishead remained the longest continuously operational radar site in the world until June 2014 when it was downgraded to a RRH (remote radar head) and radar operation from the site stopped.

The site’s R17 ROTOR bunker served the Type 84 Radar head, which is still present and featured in some of the photos below. The R12 Surface Building used to have a type 85 Radar head on the roof, but this has now been removed. These photographs document their current state in May 2017, when the power was still on in both the 3 storey surface R12 building, and the two storey underground R17 bunker, which is accessed from a small ‘bungalow’ type surface building.
