A video of Maen Offeren Slate Quarry above the North Wales town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. It depicts the quarry’s gradual decline both underground and on the surface using video and photographs collected over the last 10 years. Whilst thieves and vandals have done most of the damage on the surface, the underground has been destroyed by the quarry workers themselves, using modern machinery and methods to untop the former underground workings to remove the last remaining slate that was left in place to support the roof by their Victorian predecessors. Due to safety reasons the untopping work has temporarily stopped, leaving the 19 quarrymen facing an uncertain future in an area where alternative employment is not particularly plentiful.
